Hi,

I came across this great App for the iPhone, and as a fellow parent, I wanted you to know about it.

It's called "Kids ID" and is an electronic ID card for your entire family. You can keep all your child's vital information up-to-date, organized, and always with you. It calculates when you need to update their photos based on their age and shows you a reminder (of course taking a new photo is easy to use with the iPhone camera right from the App).

It also has a detailed emergency checklist in case your child is lost or missing. I know my kids can wander off at times, so it's comforting to know I have this with me. With one touch I can quickly show someone their recent photo or dial 911 if my child is truly lost. I can also easily send an electronic ID card and current photo to law enforcement, a local security office, or anyone with an email address. I know if my child were missing it would be frightening. It is comforting to know that I have this step-by-step checklist to follow.

Besides the safety features, I also like having some of their basic info with me like clothing sizes and the names of their medication which I find is always hard to remember.

TIPS TO BE PREPARED

In the case of a missing child, law enforcement officials need vital information including a current photo from a parent or guardian as soon as possible. The stress of the situation can interfere with the ability to collect accurate and complete information and every moment is critical to recovering a child safely.

  1. Keep a complete description of your child. This description must include color of hair, color of eyes, height, weight, and date of birth. You should also include identifiers such as eyeglasses, braces, pierced ears, and other unique physical attributes. This complete description, as well as the parent or guardian information, must be written down and readily available to provide to others in the event of a lost or missing child.
  2. Take color photographs of your child often. Experts recommend a new ID photo as often as every month for infants and every six months for older children. Kids ID will calculate the recommended photo update interval based on your child's age and display an "Update Needed" prompt telling you it's time to update your child's information.
  3. Know what to do if you child is lost or missing. Kids ID provides you a step-by-step checklist to follow in case of emergency.
  4. Have current information organized and ready to send to Law Enforcement Agencies. Kids ID ensures that all needed information is available and at your fingertips. In many situations time is critical. With Kids ID no time is wasted trying to gather up vital information and a current photo.
  5. Be able to provide someone a list of medical issues and any current medications. Kids ID makes it easy to record these difficult to remember items.

  2. If you are a chaperone for your children and a few of their friends, consider quickly adding a few guest children to the App and take their photos. That way you have an instant ID card to show local security or any other adults who can assist in the event one of the children gets lost.

About Us

A few years back we had the idea to make Amber Alerts available to mobile users via text messages on their cell phones. I worked with a few friends and together we setup a free regional alert system which was used by the new California CHP ENTAC division. This augmented their current system based on electronic highway signs.

We also had the opportunity to push the idea to a VP at Nextel for nationwide consideration. After meeting with his group, they presented the idea to the CTIA which was later instrumental in helping to establish nationwide cell phone notification for missing kids. We are glad we could offer a little help for such a worthy cause.

While the Amber Alert system is very good, an ounce of prevention goes a long way towards keeping our kids safe. It is the goal of Kids ID to give parents tools for their child's safety, and to be able to quickly provide a Law Enforcement Agency with a complete, current, and accurate description of a lost or missing child. In most situations, time is critical. We know that the quicker the search starts the more likely a quick recovery.
